The jury of the VIII Concurso Internacional de Canto Alfredo Kraus, chaired by Mexican tenor\u00a0Francisco Araiza<\/strong>, will announce the prize winners from among the finalists, who will perform at a public show on\u00a0Saturday 25 September<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a07.00 pm<\/strong>\u00a0in the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.<\/p>\n

Tickets for the final, including a performance by the\u00a0Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra<\/strong>\u00a0conducted by maestro\u00a0\u00d3liver D\u00edaz<\/strong>, are on sale at\u00a0www.auditorioteatrolaspalmasgc.es<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0www.auditorio-alfredokraus.com<\/a>, and ticket offices at the Auditorium and Teatro P\u00e9rez Gald\u00f3s.<\/p>\n

The President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria,\u00a0Antonio Morales M\u00e9ndez<\/strong>, Councillor for Finance,\u00a0Pedro Justo Brito<\/strong>, and the Chair of the Fundaci\u00f3n Internacional Alfredo Kraus,\u00a0Rosa Kraus Ley<\/strong>, representing the two organising institutions of the CICAK, expressed their satisfaction with the considerable impact of the Competition this year despite the difficulties caused by Covid restrictions worldwide.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0Francisco Araiza<\/strong>\u00a0explained, this year\u2019s contestants include \u201cfirst-rate talent\u201d. The Mexican tenor said, \u201cSingers these days face very tough competition, making it difficult for them to stand out. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to have this type of competition, to help them on their career path\u201d.<\/p>\n

Araiza also highlighted \u201cthe empathy\u201d between the singers and the jury. \u201cRather than deciding whether or not a singer is up to the mark, it\u2019s about giving them advice to help them with their career,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Jury Chair also spoke of his memories of Alfredo Kraus: \u201cFor me he was the most elegant and noblest singer I\u2019ve ever met; we enjoyed a very close friendship, both professionally and personally\u201d.<\/p>\n

At the\u00a0semi-final round<\/strong>\u00a0in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, held on Sunday 19, Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 September,\u00a049 singers<\/strong>\u00a0who had successfully completed the preliminary rounds in Madrid, Florence, Lisbon and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria took part, joined by a group with direct entry into the semi-final after finishing as finalists or winners of other international singing competitions, pursuant to the rules of the competition.<\/p>\n

For the eighth CICAK, the organisers received\u00a0124 applications\u00a0<\/strong>from\u00a028 countries<\/strong>\u00a0by the applications closing date, on 28 June. This number far exceeds the applications for all the previous competitions since it was created in 1990.<\/p>\n

Replies to the international call for applications made by the organisers of the VIII CICAK were received from 44 sopranos, 18 mezzo-sopranos, one countertenor, 26 tenors, 22 baritones, eight bass baritones and five basses, aged 23 to 35.<\/p>\n

The 124 applicants were from 28 countries: Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Latvia, Lebanon, Mexico, Norway, The Netherlands, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, Spain, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States and Venezuela.<\/p>\n

At the preliminary rounds in Madrid, Florence and Lisbon, held from 26 May to 17 June, 62 applicants auditioned and 32 were selected by the tribunal. At the preliminary round in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on 17 and 18 September, 12 more applicants took part.<\/p>\n

Internationally renowned jury<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Competition jury is chaired by internationally renowned Mexican tenor Francisco Araiza, a doyen among the Mexican opera singers who triumphed abroad from the 1970s. He enjoyed a close association with Alfredo Kraus, both as a friend and professionally. In a career spanning 45 years, Araiza has sung much of the repertoire that Alfredo Kraus performed.<\/p>\n

Like the Gran Canarian tenor, Francisco Araiza has been honoured with the prestigious title of\u00a0Kammers\u00e4nger<\/em>by the Opera of Vienna. In recent decades, as Alfredo Kraus did, Araiza has combined his performing career with work as a singing teacher at specialist schools and on master classes.<\/p>\n

Francisco Araiza\u00a0<\/strong>will chair a jury made up of representatives from the collaborating theatres:\u00a0Daniel Bianco<\/strong>, Director, Teatro de la Zarzuela (Madrid);\u00a0Luca Ioseffini<\/strong>, Academy Director, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Florence); and\u00a0Elisabete Matos<\/strong>, Artistic Director, Teatro de S\u00e3o Carlos (Lisbon). They\u2019ll be joined by\u00a0Alessandro Galoppini<\/strong>, Casting Manager, Teatro alla Scala (Milan);\u00a0Celestino Varela<\/strong>, General and Artistic Manager, \u00d3pera de Oviedo;\u00a0Ulises Ja\u00e9n<\/strong>, General and Artistic Manager, \u00d3pera de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria \/ ACO; and honorary member\u00a0Jer\u00f3nimo Saavedra Acevedo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As in the last two events, the competition will be chaired by\u00a0Rosa Kraus Ley<\/strong>, Chair of the FIAK and the CICAK, with\u00a0Mario Pontiggia<\/strong>, Artistic Director of the FIAK and the CICAK, as Artistic Director and Secretary.<\/p>\n

The main task of the VIII CICAK jury is to discover new opera talent and help young singers on their career path, in line with the original idea of the competition conceived by Alfredo Kraus.<\/p>\n

Prizes and invitations to perform<\/strong><\/p>\n

The CICAK awards\u00a0three official prizes of 14,000, 12,000 and 10,000 euros<\/strong>, and in addition to the monetary prizes and a diploma, the winners will receive a medal designed by the tenor\u2019s granddaughter,\u00a0Gara Mart\u00edn Kraus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Two special<\/strong>\u00a0prizes<\/strong>\u00a0are also available: the\u00a0Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Hall prize of 3,000 euros<\/strong>\u00a0and a diploma for the best singer of Spanish nationality, and the\u00a0Fundaci\u00f3n Mart\u00edn Chirino de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria prize of 2,500<\/strong>\u00a0euros and a medal and diploma for the best Canary Islands singer. The finalists will also have the opportunity to be invited to auditions and\/or productions, concerts or recitals by the members of the Jury and the theatres they represent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
