The Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the Fundaci\u00f3n Internacional Alfredo Kraus (FIAK) are inviting applications for the\u00a0VIII Concurso Internacional de Canto Alfredo Kraus (VIII CICAK)<\/strong>, to be held at the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria,\u00a0from 20 to 25 September 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The event is the third in this second phase of the competition, said the President of the Cabildo,\u00a0Antonio Morales<\/strong>, accompanied by the Chair of the Foundation,\u00a0Rosa Kraus Ley<\/strong>, during their joint presentation with the Councillor for Culture,\u00a0Guacimara Medina<\/strong>, Councillor for Finance,\u00a0Pedro Justo Brito<\/strong>, and Councillor for the Presidency,\u00a0Teodoro Sosa<\/strong>.
\nDue to conditions during the health pandemic, the organisers will maintain strict controls to ensure the Covid measures in force are followed at all times, as they look forward to the challenge of holding such an important event for the cultural promotion of Gran Canaria and discovering new opera talent.<\/p>\n

Internationally renowned jury<\/strong><\/p>\n

The jury of the\u00a0VIII CICAK<\/strong>\u00a0will be chaired by Italian baritone\u00a0Leo Nucci<\/strong>, an outstanding figure in international opera. As a colleague, friend and admirer of Kraus, whose art, technical and musical intelligence and ethics he highlighted, Leo Nucci has agreed to chair the jury, a role he rarely performs.<\/p>\n

Nucci has enjoyed a brilliant career, performing at leading theatres and concert halls and making recordings that have become part of history, although his artistry has allowed him to remain active. In recent years he has taken up the challenge of training new generations of singers.<\/p>\n

Alfredo Kraus and Leo Nucci shared the stage at theatres including Vienna\u2019sStaatsoper, Regio de Parma, Liceo de Barcelona and Milan\u2019s La Scala. In 1977, Nucci appeared at the Teatro P\u00e9rez Gald\u00f3s in\u00a0Lucia di Lammermoor<\/em>, returning to the island for\u00a0L\u2019Elisir d\u2019amore<\/em>\u00a0(1978) and\u00a0Rigoletto<\/em>\u00a0(2017), his most recent visit before accepting his role in this year\u2019s competition.
\nRepresentatives from the collaborating theatres will participate as jury members:\u00a0Daniel Bianco<\/strong>, Director, Teatro Nacional de La Zarzuela (Madrid);\u00a0Anton Gradsack<\/strong>, Casting Manager, Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Florence); and\u00a0Elisabete Matos<\/strong>, Artistic Director, Teatro de S\u00e3o Carlos (Lisbon). They\u2019ll be joined by\u00a0Alessandro Galoppini<\/strong>, Casting Manager, Teatro alla Scala (Milan);\u00a0Celestino Varela<\/strong>, General and Artistic Manager, \u00d3pera de Oviedo;\u00a0Ulises Ja\u00e9n<\/strong>, General and Artistic Manager, \u00d3pera de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria \/ ACO; and two honorary members,\u00a0Guillermo Garc\u00eda-Alcalde<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Jer\u00f3nimo Saavedra Acevedo.<\/strong>
\nAs in the last two events, the competition will be chaired by\u00a0Rosa Kraus Ley<\/strong>, Chair of the FIAK and the CICAK, with\u00a0Mario Pontiggia<\/strong>, Artistic Director of the FIAK and the CICAK, as Artistic Director and Secretary.<\/p>\n

Applications and venues for the competition rounds<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0VIII CICAK<\/strong>\u00a0is open to singers of all nationalities aged 18 to 32 for soprano, countertenor and tenor voices, and 18 to 35 for mezzo-soprano, contralto, baritone, bass-baritone and bass voices.<\/p>\n

Singers who\u2019d like to take part can apply using the\u00a0digital application form<\/strong>\u00a0available to download from the competition\u00a0website<\/strong>\u00a0(www.cicakraus.es<\/strong>). The closing dates for applications are:\u00a015 May<\/strong>\u00a0(Madrid),\u00a019 May<\/strong>\u00a0(Florence),\u00a05 June<\/strong>\u00a0(Lisbon) and\u00a028 June<\/strong>\u00a0(Las Palmas de Gran Canaria).<\/p>\n

The\u00a0preliminary rounds\u00a0<\/strong>will be held at the\u00a0Teatro Nacional de La Zarzuela, Madrid (26 and 27 May)<\/strong>,\u00a0Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Florence (30 and 31 May)<\/strong>,\u00a0Teatro de S\u00e3o Carlos, Lisbon (16 and 17 June)\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (17 and 18 September)<\/strong>. Applicants will be judged by a tribunal comprising the Chair and the Artistic Director of the FIAK and the CICAK and representatives of the collaborating institutions hosting each round.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0semi-final (20 and 21 September)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0final rounds (25 September)<\/strong>\u00a0will take place at the\u00a0Alfredo Kraus Auditorium<\/strong>, the emblematic building opened by Alfredo Kraus in 1997. In these rounds, contestants will be judged by the jury. The final round, where the prize giving will take place, will be held as a public performance with the\u00a0Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria<\/strong>, the official accompanist since the first competition, in 1990, conducted on this occasion by maestro\u00a0Oliver D\u00edaz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Prizes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Contestants in the\u00a0VIII CICAK\u00a0<\/strong>will be eligible for very attractive prizes. The\u00a0three Official Prizes, of 14,000, 12,000 and 10,000 euros<\/strong>, plus a medal and diploma, and the\u00a0Audience Prize<\/strong>,\u00a0of 2,500 euros<\/strong>\u00a0and a diploma, are part of the considerable funding from the esteemed patronage of the\u00a0Cabildo de Gran Canaria<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition,\u00a0two Special Prizes are available<\/strong>: the\u00a0Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Hall<\/strong>\u00a0prize,\u00a0of 3,000 euros\u00a0<\/strong>and a diploma, for the best singer of Spanish nationality, and theFundaci\u00f3n Mart\u00edn Chirino de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria\u00a0<\/strong>prize of\u00a02,500 euros\u00a0<\/strong>and a medal and diploma for the best Canary Islands singer. The finalists will have the opportunity to be invited to auditions and\/or productions, concerts or recitals by the members of the Jury and the theatres they represent.<\/p>\n

Faithful to the original idea of Alfredo Kraus in 1989, the purpose of the competition is to support young opera singers and enable them to access employment internationally. These were the aims of the Gran Canarian tenor when he inaugurated the competition in 1990 and continued to hold it until 1999, the year of his death.<\/p>\n

Keeping to these principles,\u00a0Rosa Kraus Ley<\/strong>, daughter of Alfredo Kraus and Chair of the Foundation that upholds his artistic legacy, and\u00a0Antonio Morales M\u00e9ndez, President of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria<\/strong>, decided to revive the competition in 2017, 18 years after the closure of the first phase.<\/p>\n

The precepts of the competition have remained unaltered: participation of young singers from Spain and abroad, judged by an artistically qualified jury, at an event held in the capital city of Gran Canaria, the tenor\u2019s birthplace. In bringing this ambitious project to fruition, the esteemed patronage of the\u00a0Cabildo de Gran Canaria<\/strong>\u00a0was fundamental. The event has also been made possible by\u00a0Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Hall<\/strong>, the\u00a0Fundaci\u00f3n Canaria Auditorio y Teatro de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria<\/strong>, the\u00a0Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra Foundation<\/strong>, and the Spanish and European theatres that have collaborated with the competition over the years.<\/p>\n
