{"id":455,"date":"2017-07-31T22:03:11","date_gmt":"2017-07-31T22:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cicakraus.com\/?p=455"},"modified":"2021-10-03T22:03:48","modified_gmt":"2021-10-03T22:03:48","slug":"one-hundred-singers-from-22-countries-apply-for-preliminary-rounds-of-singing-competition-vi-concurso-internacional-de-canto-alfredo-kraus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cicakraus.com\/en\/one-hundred-singers-from-22-countries-apply-for-preliminary-rounds-of-singing-competition-vi-concurso-internacional-de-canto-alfredo-kraus\/","title":{"rendered":"One hundred singers from 22 countries apply for preliminary rounds of singing competition VI Concurso Internacional de Canto Alfredo Kraus"},"content":{"rendered":"<section id=\"one\">\n<blockquote><p>\u2022 After Madrid and Florence, the third preliminary round of the competition organised by the Gran Canaria Cabildo (Island Council) and Fundaci\u00f3n Internacional Alfredo Kraus will be held on 21 and 22 September in the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus<br \/>\n\u2022 The organisers estimate that 60 contestants will take part in the semi-final on 25 and 26 September; winners in this round will participate in the competition final on 29 September at a performance before a public audience<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Gran Canaria Cabildo<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Fundaci\u00f3n International Alfredo Kraus<\/strong>, organisers of the\u00a0<strong>VI Concurso Internacional de Canto Alfredo Kraus 2017,<\/strong>\u00a0have announced that\u00a0<strong>100 singers of 22 nationalities<\/strong>\u00a0applied for the three rounds of the competition, considerably exceeding the number of entries in the five previous events.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants were from Angola, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Malta, Mexico, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Romania, Russia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>An overview of the preliminary rounds in Madrid and Florence was made by the President of the Gran Canaria Cabildo,\u00a0<strong>Antonio Morales<\/strong>, Councillor for Finance and Presidency,\u00a0<strong>Pedro Justo Brito<\/strong>, Councillor for Culture,\u00a0<strong>Carlos Ruiz<\/strong>, and the Chair of Fundaci\u00f3n Internacional Alfredo Kraus,\u00a0<strong>Rosa Kraus Ley<\/strong>, as they spoke about the participation in the recently held preliminary and semi-final rounds and the final round in September, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.<\/p>\n<p>Rosa Kraus Ley, daughter of Gran Canarian tenor Alfredo Kraus, said \u201cThe sixth competition has surpassed our expectations, considerably exceeding the number of participants in previous years, with 60 candidates for the semi-final, to be held in Gran Canaria. The jury will have a hard task selecting the finalists during the three days of the round in Gran Canaria and will demand a considerable level of excellence from candidates\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In her opinion, Alfredo Kraus \u201cwas unique, like all great artists. His name continues to be internationally renowned, which explains the success of a competition that\u2019s held every two years and hasn\u2019t actually taken place since the fifth event, in 1999.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rosa Kraus said the competition was looking for \u201cnew voices and new artists, to give a professional boost to their careers. The jury wants candidates who not only sing well, but are capable of expressing themselves as actors on the stage, because opera\u2019s becoming an increasingly comprehensive show\u201d. The monetary prizes for the competition are 14,000, 12,000 and 10,000 euros.<\/p>\n<p>After the selections made in the preliminary round in\u00a0<strong>Madrid<\/strong>, with\u00a0<strong>seven successful applicants<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Florence<\/strong>, with\u00a0<strong>12<\/strong>, the next stage of the competition will be held in\u00a0<strong>Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on 21 and 22 September<\/strong>\u00a0in the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus.\u00a0<strong>Twenty-eight applicants<\/strong>\u00a0will take part in the third preliminary round.<\/p>\n<p>All the candidates selected in the preliminary rounds in Madrid, Florence and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will go on to the semi-final, which will also be held in the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, on\u00a0<strong>25 and 26 September<\/strong>. They will be joined by\u00a0<strong>32 candidates who were finalists in other international competitions. More than 60 young singers<\/strong>\u00a0are expected to take part in the semi-final.<\/p>\n<p>The semi-final will take place in the Chamber Hall of the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, before a prestigious jury chaired by mezzo-soprano\u00a0<strong>Teresa Berganza<\/strong>, with members\u00a0<strong>Joan Matabosch<\/strong>, artistic director of Madrid\u2019s Royal Theatre,\u00a0<strong>Daniel Bianco<\/strong>, artistic director of the National Zarzuela Theatre (Madrid),\u00a0<strong>Ernesto Palacio<\/strong>, artistic director of the Rossini Opera Festival (Pesaro),\u00a0<strong>Pierangelo Conte<\/strong>, artistic coordinator of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino \/ Opera of Florence,\u00a0<strong>C\u00e9sar Wonenburger<\/strong>, artistic director of Friends of the Opera of A Coru\u00f1a,\u00a0<strong>Ulises Ja\u00e9n<\/strong>, artistic director of Canary Islands Friends of the Opera, and honorary members\u00a0<strong>Jer\u00f3nimo Saavedra Acevedo<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Guillermo Garc\u00eda-Alcalde<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<strong>29 September<\/strong>, the Symphonic Hall of the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus will be the venue for the\u00a0<strong>final round and the prize giving<\/strong>, with a public audience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Candidates chosen in Florence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the auditions of the second preliminary round of VI Concurso Internacional de Canto Alfredo Kraus, at the Opera of Florence,\u00a0<strong>26 singers of seven nationalities applied<\/strong>. After 24 had performed (two stood down due to illness), the judges cast votes from two to nine points and considered applicants with a score of seven or more eligible to enter the semi-final round in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The 12 contestants chosen by the judges were\u00a0<strong>Eunhee Kim<\/strong>\u00a0(Soprano \/ South Korea),\u00a0<strong>Tommaso Barea<\/strong>\u00a0(Bass-baritone \/ Italy),\u00a0<strong>Eleonora Bellocci<\/strong>, (Soprano \/ Italy),\u00a0<strong>Hoerim Park<\/strong>\u00a0(Tenor \/ South Korea),\u00a0<strong>Benjamin Cho<\/strong>\u00a0(Baritone \/ South Korea),\u00a0<strong>Eduardo Pialli<\/strong>\u00a0(Baritone \/ Colombia \u2013 Italy),\u00a0<strong>Yauci Yanes<\/strong>\u00a0(Tenor \/ Spain),\u00a0<strong>Lena Kutzner<\/strong>\u00a0(Soprano \/ Germany),\u00a0<strong>Qianming Dou<\/strong>\u00a0(Baritone \/ China),\u00a0<strong>Cecilia Gaetani<\/strong>\u00a0(Mezzo-soprano \/ Italy),\u00a0<strong>Chiara Mogini<\/strong>\u00a0(Soprano \/ Italy) and\u00a0<strong>Manuel Rodr\u00edguez Remiro<\/strong>\u00a0(Tenor \/ Spain).<\/p>\n<p>The judging panel comprised\u00a0<strong>Rosa Kraus Ley<\/strong>, Chair of Fundaci\u00f3n Internacional Alfredo Kraus, and\u00a0<strong>Mario Pontiggia<\/strong>, artistic director of the competition, and from the Opera of Florence, maestro\u00a0<strong>Gianni Tangucci<\/strong>, coordinator of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Academy, and\u00a0<strong>Giovanni Vitali<\/strong>, head of cultural promotion. The judges were joined by\u00a0<strong>Laura Kraus Ley<\/strong>, member of the Alfredo Kraus Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>During the first day of auditions, Rosa and Laura Kraus Ley were received by the intendant of the Opera of Florence,\u00a0<strong>Cristiano Chiarot<\/strong>, with whom they reminisced about the artistic links of Alfredo Kraus with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Theatre: two tours to Spain in 1961, 19 productions starting in 1962 and four recitals, the last in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>They also had the chance to learn about the project to recover the sound recordings of historic evenings by Alfredo Kraus at Teatro Comunale, such as Werther and Lucrezia Borgia, which Maggio Musicale is retrieving from its historic archive to make available to today\u2019s public.<\/p>\n<p>Intendant Chiarot, a great admirer of Kraus, indicated his firm intention of collaborating with Fundaci\u00f3n Internacional Alfredo Kraus by providing Maggio Musicale archive material about the tenor and raising interest among other Italian theatres where Kraus performed, including Milan, Venice, Parma, Naples and Palermo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Candidates chosen in Madrid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first preliminary round of VI CICAK 2017 was held on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 June in the theatre at the Madrid School of Singing, with\u00a0<strong>16 applicants of five nationalities<\/strong>\u00a0taking part.<\/p>\n<p>The seven contestants chosen by the judging panel were sopranos\u00a0<strong>Berna Perles<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Blanca Valido<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mar\u00eda del Alba Moreno Chantar<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Anna Niebla Guarinos<\/strong>\u00a0from Spain and\u00a0<strong>Olena Sloia<\/strong>\u00a0from Ukraine; and mezzo-sopranos\u00a0<strong>Olga Syniakova<\/strong>\u00a0from Ukraine and\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Gillming<\/strong>\u00a0from France.<\/p>\n<p>The judging panel comprised\u00a0<strong>Rosa Kraus Ley<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Mario Pontiggia<\/strong>, plus the director of the Madrid School of Singing,\u00a0<strong>Julio Alexis Mu\u00f1oz<\/strong>, and the School\u2019s deputy director,\u00a0<strong>Sara Matarranz<\/strong>.
