Fundaci\u00f3n Internacional Alfredo Kraus<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Gran Canaria Island Council<\/strong>\u00a0are calling for applications for the singing competition\u00a0VI Concurso Internacional de Canto Alfredo Kraus<\/strong>, to be held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from 25 to 29 September 2017. Intended to support young opera singers, the competition is reviving an initiative of Gran Canarian tenor Alfredo Kraus, organiser of the first five events held biennially from 1990 until 1999, the year of his death.<\/p>\n

Following Kraus\u2019 original idea, his daughter Rosa Kraus Ley, Chair of the foundation that upholds the tenor\u2019s artistic legacy, and Gran Canaria Island Council, headed by\u00a0Antonio Morales M\u00e9ndez<\/strong>, have revived the singing competition 18 years later with three basic precepts: an event for young singers from Spain and abroad, judged by a highly qualified jury, held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the tenor\u2019s city of birth. The collaboration of\u00a0Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Hall<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Fundaci\u00f3n Canaria Auditorio y Teatro de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria<\/strong>\u00a0has been essential in achieving this.<\/p>\n

The auditorium opened by the tenor in 1997,\u00a0Auditorio Alfredo Kraus<\/strong>, will host the\u00a0semi-final (25 and 26 September) and the final round (29 September)<\/strong>\u00a0of the competition. Finalists will be accompanied by the\u00a0Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra<\/strong>\u00a0and perform for a public audience. The prizes will be announced at this event.<\/p>\n

As Kraus intended, the venue cities for the\u00a0preliminary round<\/strong>\u00a0will vary with each competition to enable singers from a range of locations to take part. For the sixth competition, the preliminary rounds will be held in\u00a0Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Madrid School of Singing, and the Opera of Florence (Florentine Musical May – Italy)<\/strong>. Candidates will be judged by a panel made up of people involved in organising the competition and directors from collaborating institutions.<\/p>\n

Through its support, Gran Canaria Island Council is paying tribute to Alfredo Kraus\u2019 achievements, contribution as cultural ambassador of the island and involvement in teaching younger generations.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0VI Concurso Internacional de Canto Alfredo Kraus<\/strong>\u00a0is open to singers of all nationalities aged 18 to 32 for soprano, countertenor and tenor voices and 18 to 35 for mezzo-soprano, contralto, baritone, bass-baritone and bass voices.<\/p>\n

Anyone who wishes to take part can\u00a0apply using the application form available here.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0Applications are open from\u00a020 May to 10 June 2017.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The\u00a0jury<\/strong>\u00a0will be made up of seven members with voting rights. The\u00a0Chair<\/strong>\u00a0will be a\u00a0singer with international experience<\/strong>, and the\u00a0six members<\/strong>\u00a0will be\u00a0artistic directors from international theatres<\/strong>. They will be joined by three non-voting members: the Chair of Fundaci\u00f3n Internacional Alfredo Kraus,\u00a0Rosa Kraus Ley<\/strong>, and two honorary members associated with the competition since it began. The position of secretary of the jury will be held by the Foundation\u2019s artistic director,\u00a0Mario Pontiggia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Prizes and invitations to perform<\/strong><\/p>\n

Participants in the VI Concurso de Canto Alfredo Kraus will be competing for substantial monetary prizes thanks to financial assistance from the Gran Canaria Island Council.\u00a0Three official prizes<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a014,000, 12,000 and 10,000 euros<\/strong>\u00a0will be awarded.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0special prizes<\/strong>\u00a0include 3,000 euros from\u00a0Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Hall<\/strong>\u00a0for the best singer of Spanish nationality and the\u00a0Audience Prize<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a02,500 euros<\/strong>\u00a0for the singer who receives most votes from the audience attending the final round.<\/a><\/p>\n

Contestants will also be eligible to receive\u00a0invitations to perform<\/strong>. The\u00a0Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra<\/strong>\u00a0will invite the winner of the first prize to perform with it in one of the following two seasons (2018 or 2019), including travel and accommodation expenses; the\u00a0Fundaci\u00f3n Canaria Auditorio y Teatro de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria<\/strong>\u00a0will invite one of the winners to give a recital in the Chamber Hall of the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, also with expenses paid; and\u00a0Madrid Royal Theatre, National Zarzuela Theatre, Rossini Opera Festival, Pesaro<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>the\u00a0Opera of Florence<\/strong>,\u00a0Friends of the Opera of A Coru\u00f1a\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Canary Islands Friends of the Opera<\/strong>\u00a0will offer auditions for upcoming productions to one or more competition prize winners.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n
