Fundación Internacional Alfredo Kraus and the Gran Canaria Cabildo (Island Council), organisers of the VI Concurso Internacional de Canto Alfredo Kraus, have announced that after the preliminary round held in Gran Canaria on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 September, with the participation of 28 applicants of 14 nationalities, the judging panel decided that nine would go on to the semi-final of the competition.
The judging panel, comprising the Chair of Fundación Internacional Alfredo Kraus and the VI CICAK, Rosa Kraus Ley, the Deputy Programming Director of Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, Manuel Benítez Rodríguez, and the artistic director of the Foundation and the VI CICAK, Mario Pontiggia, were responsible for the auditions of the applicants, who were accompanied by maestro Juan Francisco Parra, official pianist for the competition.
After the auditions, the panel cast its vote and considered nine applicants, in the following order, eligible to go on to the semi-final round, to be held before the official jury of the competition on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 September: 1 / Carlos Alberto VELAZQUEZ ACUÑA (Tenor / Mexico) – 2 / Nina-Maria FISCHER (Soprano / Germany-Poland) – 3 / Jasper LEEVER (Bass-baritone / The Netherlands) – 4 / Mónica SOTO-GIL CASTRO (Mezzo-soprano / Mexico) – 5 / Danae ELENI (Soprano / Greece) – 6 / Sara PAONE (Mezzo-soprano / Italy) – 7 / Arisbe DE LA BARRERA RAMIREZ (Soprano / Mexico) – 8 Clare GHIGO (Mezzo-soprano / Malta) – 9 / Jennifer RAMIREZ DIAZ (Mezzo-soprano / Spain).
The preliminary round in Gran Canaria is the final audition before the semi-final. The nine candidates chosen at the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus will join the seven from the Madrid round and the 12 from Florence. The semi-final will also include 32 candidates who gained direct entry after finishing as finalists in other international competitions.
After the semi-final, the Symphonic Hall of the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus will be the venue on 29 September for the final round and the prize giving, with a public audience. The competition finalists will be accompanied at this event by the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by maestro Miguel Pérez-Sierra. Tickets for the Final, to be held in the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, are on sale at www.auditorioteatrolaspalmasgc.es and www.auditorio-alfredokraus.com, and at ticket offices at the Auditorium and Teatro Pérez Galdós. The Final will be recorded and broadcast later by Radio Televisión Canaria.
