Fundación Internacional Alfredo Kraus and Gran Canaria Island Council are calling for applications for the singing competition VI Concurso Internacional de Canto Alfredo Kraus, to be held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from 25 to 29 September 2017. Intended to support young opera singers, the competition is reviving an initiative of Gran Canarian tenor Alfredo Kraus, organiser of the first five events held biennially from 1990 until 1999, the year of his death.

Following Kraus’ original idea, his daughter Rosa Kraus Ley, Chair of the foundation that upholds the tenor’s artistic legacy, and Gran Canaria Island Council, headed by Antonio Morales Méndez, have revived the singing competition 18 years later with three basic precepts: an event for young singers from Spain and abroad, judged by a highly qualified jury, held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the tenor’s city of birth. The collaboration of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Hall and Fundación Canaria Auditorio y Teatro de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has been essential in achieving this.

The auditorium opened by the tenor in 1997, Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, will host the semi-final (25 and 26 September) and the final round (29 September) of the competition. Finalists will be accompanied by the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra and perform for a public audience. The prizes will be announced at this event.

As Kraus intended, the venue cities for the preliminary round will vary with each competition to enable singers from a range of locations to take part. For the sixth competition, the preliminary rounds will be held in Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Madrid School of Singing, and the Opera of Florence (Florentine Musical May - Italy). Candidates will be judged by a panel made up of people involved in organising the competition and directors from collaborating institutions.

Through its support, Gran Canaria Island Council is paying tribute to Alfredo Kraus’ achievements, contribution as cultural ambassador of the island and involvement in teaching younger generations.

The VI Concurso Internacional de Canto Alfredo Kraus is open to singers of all nationalities aged 18 to 32 for soprano, countertenor and tenor voices and 18 to 35 for mezzo-soprano, contralto, baritone, bass-baritone and bass voices.

Anyone who wishes to take part can apply using the application form available here. Applications are open from 20 May to 10 June 2017.

The jury will be made up of seven members with voting rights. The Chair will be a singer with international experience, and the six members will be artistic directors from international theatres. They will be joined by three non-voting members: the Chair of Fundación Internacional Alfredo Kraus, Rosa Kraus Ley, and two honorary members associated with the competition since it began. The position of secretary of the jury will be held by the Foundation’s artistic director, Mario Pontiggia.

Prizes and invitations to perform

Participants in the VI Concurso de Canto Alfredo Kraus will be competing for substantial monetary prizes thanks to financial assistance from the Gran Canaria Island Council. Three official prizes of 14,000, 12,000 and 10,000 euros will be awarded.

The special prizes include 3,000 euros from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Hall for the best singer of Spanish nationality and the Audience Prize of 2,500 euros for the singer who receives most votes from the audience attending the final round.

Contestants will also be eligible to receive invitations to perform. The Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra will invite the winner of the first prize to perform with it in one of the following two seasons (2018 or 2019), including travel and accommodation expenses; the Fundación Canaria Auditorio y Teatro de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will invite one of the winners to give a recital in the Chamber Hall of the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, also with expenses paid; and Madrid Royal Theatre, National Zarzuela Theatre, Rossini Opera Festival, Pesaro, the Opera of Florence, Friends of the Opera of A Coruña and Canary Islands Friends of the Opera will offer auditions for upcoming productions to one or more competition prize winners.
